Real given option to punish Dortmund humiliation
Real Madrid was provided an option to punish last season’s Champions League semi-final crush by Borussia Dortmund. The squads were strained next to each other on March 21 in the quarter-finals of this year’s contest. Dortmund succeeded the initial leg 4-1 on the mode to a 4-3 collective win. They will trip the Bernabeu for the opening stage on April 1/2 with the comeback a week later. Title owners Bayern Munich were joined with Manchester United. A conference that will certainly flash memories of their 1999 final when United scored two goals at the loss to win 2-1. Bayern will be at residence in the second stage as the squads assemble for the first time from when the 2010 quarter-final which the Bavarians succeeded. Paris St Germain faces Chelsea and the remaining others tie is an all-Spanish event between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, the teams’ first-ever gathering in European tournament.
Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said, “That’s a big big blow. He is a great player. It was a ridiculous decision”.
“We would have liked to get someone else. Real is the world’s biggest football club. But there is no easy draw here at this stage. We just have to be as best prepared as possible. It will take an enormous effort from everyone to do well. Obviously we had a great team (last year) whether or not we can raise the level of our game we will see.”
