Real Madrid safely into last eight
Star club Real Madrid squalled into quarter-finals of the Champions League with a club record 9-2 cumulative victory after Cristiano Ronaldo hit double in a 3-1 win at home next to Schalke 04 on March 18.
Real were almost pledged of a place in the final eight after beating the Bundesliga side 6-1 in Gelsenkirchen in the first leg and coach Carlo Ancelotti relaxed a host of normal for the revisit at the Bernabeu with an eye on Sunday’s La Liga “Clasico” next to Barcelona. Gareth Bale place up Ronaldo for Real’s 21st-minute starter and Schalke leveled 10 minutes later when a extended-range Tim Hoogland attempt prevented off Sergio Ramos and jumped past the stranded Iker Casillas.
It was Real’s largest collective Champions League victory after striking APOEL Nicosia 8-2 in 2011-12. Ronaldo’s twice meant he exceeded his previous best Champions League haul of 12 from previous season and he has 41 in all contests for Real, the La Liga leaders, and this term.
